I have gardened all my adult life, even through many early moves in rentals. I had to garden, and bring the outside in. (It's my mother's fault!). My current garden, or gardens, have made many transformations during the fifty years we have been here. Early on, I was passionate about the English garden, wide perennial beds. I maintained them meticulously. Fast forward to my late 70's, I am fortunate if I can reach down to pull a few juicy shot weeds, ready to spew their millions of seeds. But my mature garden (heavily planted) essentially takes care of itself, while I am inside painting.
The deer! All this time, they have been "companions," wanting and usually devouring everything I wanted to flourish, even busting through a seven-foot high deer fence. Slugs. Rabbits, voles and moles. Voracious insects. Drought and deluge. Why do I persist against such impossible odds? I have to. It's that simple.
I have pots of tulips on the deck, high above where the deer can reach them. Spring will be glorious!
I love picturing the insect hotel 🐝🐛🦋🐞🪲

Hahaha yeah you do!!
Thank you, Anna.
