Anna, I’m so far behind on reading your posts and found myself on this one just now. Your insight into the changes of adventuring over the course of ones lifetime are so beautifully acknowledged; you reminder to keep our life’s adventure muscles stretched is so right. Just back from a weeklong camping trip into Alaska’s Interior... which may well have been a backpacking trip 30 years ago... like you, my brain cleared and my soul rejoiced. Thank you.

Hi Anna! This is music to my soul. I write about noticing the natural world in Microseasons-- 72 tiny seasons, each just 5 days long. It’s an ancient idea, actually, and I think you might enjoy it, too. Thank you for sharing the peace of your beach walk with us. 🙏 🐚

I’d love to see more writers explore the microseasons. It’s definitely an idea whose time is coming for those of us in the western world. It’s been long-practiced in China and Japan with such beauty. Enjoy!!!

What a beautiful reflection on an epic adventure! At 43, I am noticing the urge to stretch my adventure muscles, after a year of limiting my physical activity while unsuccessfully pursuing fertility treatments. I’ve been noticing the pattern of hours and days slipping away; of alarming screen-time notifications on my phone; of spending too many hours and days inside. I know I “should” make time to “be” in my day-to-day life, but I struggle to do that unless I take a trip that cuts me off from technology.

It’s time to recalibrate. Just six years ago, I completed peak-bagging the list of 100 highest peaks in New England in winter. Three years ago, I finished section-hiking the 750 miles of Appalachian Trail in New England. The one consolation I find in not having children (at least not yet) is the freedom to adventure, so I’m planning some big ones for this summer, fall, and winter: Alaska? Baja? If I make it that far in my 1999 Roadtrek, I’ll be sure to stop and scope out your route on the Olympic Peninsula. It sounds divine!

Thank you for sharing your experiences and insights, Anna (and thanks to Katherine May for sharing your newsletter!).
