Papercut, Anna Brones, 2022

Welcome to 24 Days of Making, Doing, and Being, a digital Advent calendar for slowing down and making space for presence, creativity, and gratitude. This is a seasonal offering for paid subscribers of the Creative Fuel newsletter. Thank you for being here. If you missed a day you can catch up here.

The other day, I was reading a newsletter from the artist Maira Kalman. She had made an enormous, hand-painted curtain for David Byrne’s musical American Utopia1 a few years ago, and after having served its role, the art had been returned to her. What exactly is one to do with a Broadway-sized curtain of hand-painted art? Kalman set about cutting it into individual pieces.

The curtain pieces were beautiful, but this isn’t what caught my eye. All the way down at the bottom of the email as her sign-off, Kalman had written, “with a reasonable amount of faith in good things.”

I immediately jotted this down in my notebook.

A reasonable amount of faith in good things.
