“Unhinged Squirrel” is good. I’ve been calling it “end of season burnout frazzle.” Same energy though, manic exhaustion. And there’s no escaping it this year, it’s 90 degrees here and the garden is sad. The fall wants to come, you feel it in morning and evening, in monarchs and spiders, but come on. I’m ready for tea and a fire and assurance of democracy.

I'm gently requesting an "unhinged squirrel energy" sticker, please. Also, those licorice ferns are stunning! Reminders of hope and resilience on every tree stump.

oh my you stated it perfectly! I am sitting in my office/studio with a pile of fall leaves, a apple painting project barely started, a drawing notebook begun to improve my skills and more - all I think to try and get a hold of the chaos I feel from the outside political world. I keep looking to the colder winter months in hopes of it all slowing down for a bit. I think like the squirrel I can't gather all the seeds and I need to be able to let some go. Thanks for this writing!

I have my own squirreling energy which still involves collecting pine cones and other treasures, but at a much slower pace. I do it unintentionally every year so I’m convinced it’s a part of my natural autumnal tradition.

“Keep it slow” would be an excellent slogan for squirreling energy. I often have a lot of chestnuts in assorted pockets by the end of the season.

Oh this totally resonates! 🫠

“Unhinged squirrel energy” is definitely what I’m feeling right now. I’m preparing to retire from a complex, demanding career that’s currently in chaos (NIH-funded international infectious disease research) and it feels like I’m fizzing around in a million different directions. The idea of just stopping is radical and delicious. I’m going to just sit with that for a while. Thank you.
