This was delightful. I just started The Glorians, as well. I used to love finding old home economics textbooks and reading the sections on childcare and nutrition. These old textbooks all said to have your baby sleep outdoors for one of their naps and if that wasn't possible to have the window open right near their sleeping area. I loved that advice so I adopted it with my own children. I love the block prints. They look so pretty. The class sounds wonderful!
I loved the book The Glorians: Visitations from the Holy Ordinary. It is about seeing and connection. Wondering about how the stamp pad ink holds on fabric over time with soap and sun. I was thinking about making stamps with potatoes but wondering if it would show up and hold. Time to do some playing.
I made some prints with ink pad on fabric earlier this summer for a garland I hung in the garden. No soap but it has been through the sprinkler and sun for two months and they look great so far.
I was just telling a friend I need to start stalking thrift stores for reference books as the rise of ai slop makes google images a useless source these days, sweet find!!
Yes! This is the way forward! There’s something nice about the constraint of just having whatever is on the pages and not the endless endless options on the screen.
"I figured since I had all the supplies on hand there was no reason not to." Oh, goodness! I have lots of supplies I'm not using, even so, but that may be a motivating sentence for me! Thanks for writing and ideas!
I love this, Anna. It describes my whole life as a child and young adult, wandering through the library's text seeing what called out to me. I have also thought a lot about how the plethora of information bombarding us detracts from that wonderful serendipity of finding the right thing at the right time. Also, I just love the black prints on fabric. Wish I lived close enough to attend your workshop!
In the spirit of those used book finds that spark joy here’s one I found at the used bookstore in Pinehurst NC (all the proceeds support their local archives): “Once in a Blue Moon Lodge” by Lorna Landvik. If anyone loves books where the whole point is to fall in love with the characters and spend as much time with them as possible, then you will like this book. Turns out the author has several other books and it’s been fun to now go in search of those too!
This post also made me think of some of the unusual creature sightings we have had this summer. Our favorite so far was an imperial moth. This led to another fun lesson when we mentioned it to our environmental educator at our nearby park. She said take a light colored sheet at night, hang it up, and put a spotlight or flashlight on it and see what other moths are hanging out on our little hillside tucked back in the woods.
