Life in Color: Building a Power Palette Creative Workshop with Alexis Joseph and Anjelika Deogirikar Grossman
Wednesday July 10, 2024, 5-6:30pm PT
Hello friends,
I’ll start by stating the obvious: politically things feel pretty bleak right now.
If you’re a reader of Creative Fuel then you will know that it’s not a newsletter that regularly delves into politics. However, that’s not to say that politics isn’t interwoven in how I write and make art. I strongly believe that creativity is a powerful tool for keeping up civically engaged. In a year where a lot of us are feeling a sense of desperation, I think it’s even more important that we identify ways to creatively take a stand for what we believe in and the futures we actively want to take a part in cultivating.
Which is why the Create+Engage series exists, and I’m happy to announce that our next session is coming up on Wednesday July 10th.
This is the fifth workshop that we’ve hosted in this series, and every time things feel bleak and depressing (and they do) I keep coming back to these community gatherings as a way to remind myself that art can be a tether and that creative practice can be a powerful action.
CREATIVE ENGAGEMENT
For those of you new to the Creative Fuel newsletter and ecosystem, Create+Engage is a series of monthly virtual programming fusing together art, activism, and community. Every month we host a creative workshop centered around a specific theme that features two guest speakers.
My Create+Engage collaborator Marta Hanson sent me a link today about how to protect democracy. The essential steps? Engage locally, find your niche, and keep the faith. Which is exactly what we try to do in these sessions.
If you’re in need of a bright spot, and some inspiration this month, I hope that you come join us! As always, these workshops are free to attend. You can sign up here.
CREATE+ENGAGE: JULY SESSION
I’m very excited about the July session. We’ll be joined by Alexis Joseph, the founder of Case for Making, and my good friend and Create+Engage collaborator
.Many of you may know Case for Making, a very cool shop in San Francisco that does an amazing job of supporting creative community. I use their paints (Squid Ink forever), have taken their workshops, and even had the honor of teaching a couple of workshops myself.
As Alexis says about Case for Making:
“We exist to support our collective creativity and we believe in the act of engaging in an artistic practice for the health of ourselves and the health of our communities.”
Yes, yes yes! Alexis will be in conversation with Anjelika, who has done lots of work in the art and activism space (and is great working with color). You can check out Anjelika’s work here.
I’m so excited to be in conversation with these two incredible artists, and I hope that you want to come join us. These workshops are hosted on Zoom and you can attend from anywhere.
I look forward to seeing some of you on July 10th!
-Anna
Life in Color: Building a Power Palette with Alexis Joseph and Anjelika Deogirikar Grossman, July 10, 5-6:30pm PT. Hosted on Zoom.
What is your color palette of creativity and joy? When do you feel most purely you? How can process, asking ourselves questions and mixing color help us clarify our values in ways that words can’t? Discover your own power palette of colors and connect with your agency in this fun and introspective session on creative action.
We can't wait to see you there!
Suggested materials for this workshop:
Pen or pencil
Paper
Some type of color (watercolor, colored pencils, markers, etc)
All of these Create+Engage sessions are free to attend. It’s really important for me to be able to offer programming like this, while still paying the guest artists an honorarium. Creative labor is labor and deserves to be compensated. Thank you to so many of you who help to make this happen.
10% of paid subscriptions every month are donated to organizations chosen by the artists. For July, we’ll be donating to Hospitality House.
This is a community effort. If you want to help support, here are a few ways.
1. BECOME A PAID SUBSCRIBER TO CREATIVE FUEL
Paid subscribers help make this newsletter and community happen, and as a thank you, you get access to seasonal editions and the monthly Nice Things series.
2. MAKE A FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION
You can also support with a financial contribution in any amount. These financial contributions go to paying speaker honorariums, as well as helping us put together our month of creative action later in September.
3. SHARE IT WITH A FRIEND
Know someone who might enjoy this series? Want to bring a friend along to the workshop? Pass this along!
Do you enjoy Creative Fuel? You can support this work by becoming a paid subscriber. You can also order something in my shop, attend one of my workshops or retreats, or buy one of my books. Or simply share this newsletter with a friend!
Also, politics is pretty depressing in France too. Depressing, sad and outraging
If I sign up but can't attend live, will I be able to watch a recording?
