I remember taking a class a couple of years ago from Claudia Solis, and she mentioned the pressure she often felt to have her sketchbook look "good." She got around this obstacle by having two sketchbooks: one that was a bit more final, and the other one that was simply process-oriented. In other words: the "rough draft sketchbook."
I think that it's easy to get overly precious about our sketchbooks, or even worse: entirely intimidated by them. We open one up and the blank pages stare at us, asking, "so what exactly are you planning on doing here?" And so instead of feeling welcomed, we feel pressured.
As we are reflecting on our creative practice this month and setting some intentions, I want us to remove that pressure. I want us to embrace process books.
