In the Northern Hemisphere, today we celebrate the winter solstice, the shortest day and longest night of the year.
Today the sun finds itself at its southernmost point. It seems to hover, hanging at the edge of the horizon. In fact, solstice in its earlier form was solstitium, from sol, the Latin word for "sun," and -stit, meaning "to stand still.”
